I might use the USB drive option when I get my next host box (will have a SAN in place before then). I do have the USB flash drives to test other systems with, to see how ESXi will run/work on them without needing to wipe the drives inside.
Is this overkill, in the home lab? Probably, but I've had zero issues with this model. I've also always used SAS drives for this due to their high MTBF ratings. I have always installed ESX/ESXi, in production environments as well as in my home lab, onto the smallest (mirrored) set of drives that I could get. It does make things easier, plus I have the RAID 1 array for redundancy (not that I've needed it, since both drives are still working like champs). Personally, I just have a RAID controller (that's on the HCL) inside my PWS T7400 host with a pair of 146GB SAS drives, mirrored, for ESXi to reside upon. By then, you'll have reinstalled different versions of ESXi onto it, and who knows what else you'll have done. That could add another layer of complexity to things.Ī quality flash drive should give you years of service before going sour. Just keep in mind that you'll need to replicate any changes you make in one, on the other. If you're concerned about the flash drive failing (hence why I mention to use a quality device) then set up a second one to have in reserve. I have one of those (32GB Survivor model) but it's too large for me to just use for running ESXi on other systems. Thank you for your time and consideration.Ĭorsair flash drive should be ok. The machine would MOSTLY be dedicated to the PBX and would have the largest chunk of the resources.

My plans (not sure if it would be helpful or not) are to install Freepbx on one VM and have another VM to use as a sandbox environment for testing Linux. I would like to get this machine running. Most seem to point to something still on the hard drive, however the hard drive has been erased to Department of Defense standards.Īny help or thoughts would be grateful. Googling has not yeilded any results that would be of use.

He inquired into what i was doing, and explained that I should use esxi as it would be much better, but i've been unable to get the software to even install. After sending an email about they broken download link, I got a call from a vmware support agent who assisted with getting a working vmware server image. When I was installing vmserver, i ran into some problems with downloading it from VMwares site. I've tried removing the HD and no cd/dvd in the drive, and it just errors out saying disk not present. I have tried unplugging the hard drive and booting to the disk but the same thing happens.

I have burned the ISO to several different disk types including CD and DVD from three different companies.Įach time I tell the system to boot from the cd or dvd drive, it starts Dr-Dos, spits out a ton of information so fast on the screen I cant copy it all, disables the USB Keyboard, and stalls at A:\ I have to pull the power plug or press and hold the power button in order to get the machine to respond.

I am attempting to install the VMware-VMvisor-Installer-4.1.0-260247.x86_64.iso onto a Precision workstation 490 with dual intel xeon woodcrest 5110 processorsand 4gb ECC Buffered memory and a 74gb Serial AttachedSCSI drive. I have pulled my hair out googling for an answer, yet one seems to elude me. I have formatted the 490 three times now with a Department of Defense approved method via killdisk.
I have burned the ISO several times to several different disks. I am having a problem with installing ESXi onto a precision. First let me say that if this is not the correct area, i am very sorry.
